Mary Wade

Little merry Mary,
Where have you gone?
Merry it is when Spring comes,
When birds sing
And flowers bloom
But now the winter winds are strong
And the nights are long.

Little merry Mary,
Where have you gone?
Gone to Australia
Aboard the Lady Juliana
For the theft of a frock
To warm a child’s heart
Sorrow and mourn is my lot

Merry still, my little Mary
Spring will come again
The ewe bleats, the lamb follows
The cow calls its calf
In green meadows cowslips bloom
And far across the ocean blue
My heart warms
With thoughts of you

[Originally sentenced to death for the theft of a coat, Mary Ann Wade (1777 – 1859) was 11 years old when transported to Australia aboard the Lady Juliana. Today, her descendants number in the tens of thousands and include a former prime minister of Australia.]
